Ten years ago Alice May Hannon attended Le Grand Picnic with her grandson, Broderick, who was then 2. May passed away in 2009 but her family continues to come up to their vacation home on the mountain. Her son, Jim, his wife, Jenny, and their twins—Broderick and Julianne, now 12, were at this year’s Le Grand Picnic.
In the early 2000s, May had heard that Mountains Community Hospital was raising money for a helipad. She asked how much they needed and was told $90,000; she wrote a check.
She matched that donation at the 2006 Le Grand Picnic because MCH and the helipad had helped save her grandson’s life.
“We were up here on Father’s Day weekend,” Jim Hannon said. “Brody fell out of a second-story window.” It was his 2-year-old sister who noticed and told her parents. Young Broderick was airlifted to Loma Linda from the helipad his grandmother had supported with her donation.
“She felt a donation goes further in a small community,” Jim said. And Broderick said whenever he’s out on the lake and sees a helicopter, he wonders if it’s coming from the hospital.
Before sampling the cuisine at this year’s picnic, Broderick posed on the helipad while his father took a photo of him.
“I wish to express my heartfelt thanks for the excellent care my young grandson received during his emergency visit,” May said in 2006. “That initial gift has now been returned to me many times over!”
